Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, primarily found in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, in the highlands of the north western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Tequila is most often made at  38–40% alcohol content , but can be produced between 31 and 55% alcohol content.

It is recognized as a Mexican designation of product origin in over 40 countries.
